Fillings are often used to repair teeth that have been damaged by a cavity. This damage is most often caused by decay, but can also sometimes be a result of injury or even simple wear and tear. With a filling, we’re able to repair and restore the tooth, leaving the mouth healthier and happier.

How will I know if I need a filling?

With regular check-ups at Shadwell Dental Centre, our team may spot the need for a filling before you even experience any symptoms or discomfort.

However, if you do start to experience any of the following symptoms, you should contact us for an appointment as soon as possible:

1. Increased sensitivity
2. Pain when chewing

What are fillings made from?

Fillings have traditionally been made with a metal amalgam material. This material is very hard-wearing and long-lasting, but it does leave behind a dark-silvery appearance in the mouth, which some patients find hard to live with. Modern advances in dental materials and techniques mean we’re now able to place white fillings which are made from composite resin and are much more natural looking, with a highly aesthetically-pleasing finish.

What is the treatment for fillings like?

Most filling treatments can be completed during one appointment:

1. Local anaesthetic is administered so you’re comfortable throughout
2. Any decayed material is removed from the tooth
3. The tooth and area are thoroughly cleaned
4. The filling material of choice is applied before being shaped, polished, and hardened into place
