MEET DENTAL IMPLANT SURGEON, Dr Robert Montgomery

Rob Graduated from the University of Leeds in 2003. Following his first year in practice, he spent a year working in the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Leeds General Infirmary, gaining experience in Oral Surgery. This led to him gaining his Diploma Membership in the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Edinburgh.

Rob returned to General practice where he demonstrated a continuing commitment to Postgraduate education to provide high quality treatment. This included Restorative training with Mike Wise in London and the completion of his certificate in Endodontics.

Rob spent eight years involved in Foundation Training in West Yorkshire. This involved mentoring newly graduated dentists to aid the transition from Dental School to Practice. This also led to his completion of a certificate in Healthcare Education at Sheffield Hallam University.

His interest in the restoration of patients’ mouths with the use of dental implants led to the undertaking and completion of a Diploma in Implant Dentistry through the Royal College of Surgeons, London. Since completion and accreditation, Rob has completed hundreds of cases.

Outside the Practice, Rob is endeavouring to find his way onto the golf course which is proving ever challenging with his young family.

How do implants work?

Titanium implants are placed in the bone and allowed to fuse naturally with your bone to create a strong support for a cosmetic crown. They can be used to replace one tooth, several teeth or all your natural teeth, creating a healthy natural-looking smile without the need to modify surrounding teeth.

The implant and crown are ergonomically-shaped to fit your mouth perfectly, allowing you talk, eat and smile with complete confidence.

Implants provide a permanent solution to tooth loss and can be as comfortable and strong as your natural teeth. Dr Rob Montgomery, uses Southern Implants, a global leader in implant, restorative and regenerative dentistry.

What are the benefits?

Dental implants are often the first choice for restoring missing teeth. Implants look and feel like your own teeth. They offer a very high success rate, approximately 97-98%. Implants take the place of the missing teeth. This avoids the need to shape and reduce the adjacent teeth to allow a bridge to be constructed. Dental implants provide a lifetime guarantee on all their components.

There are other major benefits, including:

  • Just like natural teeth, they look, fit and feel like part of your own mouth.
  • Implants are very durable and last for as long as you care for them.
  • Improved speech, unlike poor-fitting dentures, which can slip in the mouth causing slurring or mumbling.
  • Implants can be used in some cases to stabilise dentures—your dentist can advise whether this would be suitable for you.
  • Improved comfort, particularly when eating your favourite foods.
  • Greater self-esteem, because they give you back your smile.
  • Convenient and easy to maintain—dental implants can be brushed and maintained exactly the same as your natural teeth.

Dental implant consultation

Initially, you will be invited to Shadwell Dental Care to carry out an assessment to determine whether you will be suitable for implants. This may involve x-rays and models of your teeth to assist in planning.

In most cases, anyone healthy enough to undergo routine dental can be considered for Dental Implant treatment. Patients should have healthy gums and sufficient bone for the implant. They also must be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental maintenance.

Your treatment is bespoke to the person and a treatment plan will be formulated taking into account your wishes and how we can help achieve them.

DENTAL IMPLANT OPTIONS

Single Tooth Dental Implants

What is a single tooth dental implant?

Designed to replace just one tooth at a time, single tooth dental implants are made up of two parts. They are the titanium peg that acts as the new root of the tooth and is implanted in the jawbone, and the prosthetic tooth that is held in place on top of it. This is normally made of highly natural-looking porcelain.

Who is suitable for this treatment?

Implants can be used to replace missing teeth on just about anyone, except younger patients whose jawbones are still developing. In some cases, patients may not have enough healthy jawbone available to immediately receive an implant, but there are treatments such as bone grafts and sinus lifts that can be used to combat this.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment for a single tooth dental implant will usually take place over a few months and includes several in-practice appointments.

What does the treatment process entail?

First, we’ll assess your suitability at a consultation, this may include X-rays and/or a CBCT scan which will be used to plan your treatment. When you come back into the practice to have your implant placed, we’ll first numb the area being treated and apply anaesthetic, so you don’t feel a thing. The titanium peg will then be placed in the jaw, and we’ll wait up to 3 months to allow the area to heal and for the implant and jaw to fully fuse together. At this point, we may provide a temporary crown for the patient to wear. After 3 months, you’ll come back into the practice, and we’ll fit you for your personal prosthesis.

What is the after-care like?

After having an implant placed, you can expect to experience some discomfort, tenderness, and pain at the site of the implant. This can be treated with over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen and paracetamol. We may also recommend eating soft foods only for a period of time, as the pressure of chewing can affect the implant at this early stage.

Implant Retained Dentures

Implant Retained Dentures

If you’re living with multiple missing teeth and looking for a stable, secure, and natural-looking alternative to traditional dentures, implant retained dentures are the answer.

At Shadwell Dental Care, we know that implants are the next best thing to a natural tooth. For our patients with multiple missing teeth, we want them to be able to find their happiest smile again, as well as to live with stable and secure prosthetic teeth they can trust. Traditional dentures may have their place, but they are prone to slippage, can be uncomfortable to wear, and can stop patients from eating and enjoying their favourite foods. Which is where implant retained dentures come in.

How do implant retained dentures work?

Designed to replace up to a whole arch of teeth at once, implant retained dentures fulfil the same function as traditional braces, but instead of being held in place via suction or dental adhesives, they are held in place with implants.

This makes for a much more comfortable, stable, and secure experience for the patient, as well as for a much more natural-looking finish. In fact, implants are so natural looking, your friends and family won’t even know they’re not your natural teeth.

What is the treatment process like?

First, we’ll make sure you’re a suitable candidate for this treatment before taking a CBCT scan to help us plan the treatment journey. When you’re being fitted for the implants, you’ll be placed under anaesthetic, so you don’t feel a thing and we’ll place 4 or more implants in the jaw. We’ll then fit an abutment on the implants onto which your dentures will be attached, holding them securely in place.

What are the benefits of implant retained dentures?

  • Natural looking
  • Enhance and restore the smile
  • Eat and chew easily
  • Fully taste your favourite foods
  • Stable and secure – no slippages
  • Prevent any movement or misalignment from the teeth
  • Support facial structures – helps to improve appearance and prevent premature signs of ageing
  • Clearer speech

Implant Retained Bridges

An Implant retained bridge is the perfect solution to replace missing teeth by inserting two or more artificial titanium roots into the jawbone and attaching a porcelain bonded bridge on to the attachments of the implants.

The bridge replaces multiple adjacent missing teeth without the use of a denture. This can be done whilst avoiding damaging healthy teeth by anchoring the bridge to the Implants which have been placed. An Implant retained bridge is a fixed option and will look natural in the mouth as well as feeling like they are your own teeth.

The treatment process and aftercare are very similar to having a single implant other than the individual stages may take slightly longer as there are more Implants involved.
